Land Trust Accreditation Commission
Native Plant Restoration Program

In support of our mission to protect significant natural, scenic, and farmlands, the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy is working to restore Michigan’s natural habitats by removing invasive species such as garlic mustard and spotted knapweed. These non-native plants have the ability to overrun and replace native vegetation degrading wildlife habitat, contributing to the endangerment of rare plants and animals, and homogenizing the landscape. The Michigan Wildlife Action Plan lists invasive species as one of the top threats to the flora and fauna of our state.

The Conservancy is attacking this serious problem on multiple fronts. Our stewardship staff have created a thoughtful management plan designed to prioritize our efforts and address the removal of invasive species on Conservancy properties. We also educate and train others on identification and proper removal methods.

We are partners with the Michigan Dune Alliance and the Northwest Michigan Cooperative Weed Management Area, both of which cover a wider service area of the Lake Michigan shoreline. We share resources, training experiences, management plans, and data collection for invasive species management with other groups, governmental agencies, and nonprofit organizations in Michigan.

The assistance of volunteers is crucial to our success regarding invasive species removal! If you are interested in helping, please visit our Events page for information on training and work days or contact the Conservancy at 231-929-7911.
